The South Carolina State University board has received a report on an increase in donations to the university and its plans to continue developing a comprehensive marketing plan to help attract more donations – and of students – at the university.

Director Jameel Allen Sr., chair of the Public Relations, Advancement and Alumni Relations Committee, provided an update on the committee’s activities at a board meeting on December 2.

A private donation report from July 1 to November 18, 2021 from the university’s Office of Institutional Advancement revealed that 1,337 donors had given a total of $ 1,160,001 to the university. Total donations increased by over 89%. The office has increased its overall giving to $ 5 million among its goals.

Sonja Bennett-Bellamy, the university’s vice president for institutional development and external affairs, reported on a successful donation Tuesday. The university surpassed its goal of $ 100,000 by raising $ 112,602 which will go to the university’s “Ready to Do Anything and Dare” fundraising campaign.

Allen said, “We want to continue to encourage participation when it comes to giving.”

He said that a university website was also in the works.

“We have an interim website … which is functioning quite well given the current state of affairs. Very interactive from a social media perspective, but the good news is that we will have a long term solution in place very soon. So it’s moving forward, “he said.

Allen said improving the college’s customer service is also in the works.

“It’s really just… the fundamentals about phone calls and having the right resources to get those phone calls back to market quickly. We have recognized that and we are seeing improvement in this area, ”he said.

Allen said the university’s entire marketing plan is also under review.

“We want to make sure that we have all the right points and investments in place to move us forward on long term sustainability,” he said, noting that the university visitors council charter is also under development.

“The BOV charter is in place. The lag we have experienced is just making sure that the SACS compliance requirements are associated with it. … We will seek the support of the board as we move forward, ”Allen said.

He thanked Hank Allen, president of the SC State National Alumni Association, for his work promoting the university.

“He held his first quarterly meeting with the National Alumni Association on November 20. … One of the things Hank Allen articulated was… all of the strategic pillars that he presented to the board and alumni sections on the national alumni platforms, ”Allen said.

“The strategic pillars have been well received. He appointed leaders and delegates to take on these pillars to ensure that these initiatives and strategic goals can be achieved in this area. “

Administrator Dr. Doris Helms said she would like to see more emphasis on academics as part of the university’s marketing strategies.

“If I were a student looking to come here, I would look for that sort of thing because, first of all, the future depends on what kind of education I get.… If you’re really looking to increase your enrollment, we need to educate people on how you advertise what we do academically and career opportunities, ”she said.

Allen said Helms was right and the university “had to do collaborative marketing of the whole of South Carolina State University.”

Bennett-Bellamy said, “We had to take a strategic approach to implementing this marketing communications plan given the funding we had. So, you know, we haven’t been able to invest in billboards. There are a lot of things we couldn’t do because we just didn’t have the money. So we had to be really creative with how we executed this shot. “

She continued, “We’re getting to who we need to go to, but what excites me is just growing tentacles and just expanding our reach beyond what we’ve done and being able to diversify further. plus many of the tools we’ve put into play. “

Sponsored and IT research

Administrator William Oden, chairman of the sponsored research and information technology committee, said the total amount of grants and contracts funded from July 1, 2021 to November 17, 2021 was $ 2,843,872.

Oden reported that Malone himself was appointed by the governor to SC’s health planning committee.

The committee chair also said that $ 236,295 in federal Title 3 funding has reached the School of Music.

Regarding infrastructure development, Oden said, “We are doing a fantastic job recovering from hackers,” but restoring data and “trying to make sure the bad guys are out” was not easy.

The university’s computer network was hacked in September.

“We’re doing a lot of upgrades… with the money that’s going to go to some of the things that we’re talking about with wireless access, smart boards – things like that in classrooms,” Oden said.

SC State Chief Information Officer Travis Johnson noted that infrastructure development is in the works.

Malone said, “These days it’s very difficult to think of doing research without the proper IT infrastructure. Therefore, I think it is a good thing to include IT in the unit that receives IDC funds (indirect costs). So we hope this will be done by mid-spring. $ 5 for 5 months

Johnson said, “The IT and Sponsored Programs Office just submitted additional funding to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for infrastructure funding. … The value of the grant will be $ 3 million over a two-year period. It’s a pilot program. So we know that the NTIA and the Department of Commerce are planning to fund more programs. “
